North Missouri Solid Waste Management District Region B Lisa Colson, Coordinator
The region B Solid Waste management District (SWMD) has been in existence since 1992. It was formed in conjunction with Senate Bill 530, which created a total of 20 solid waste districts in Missouri. By law, each district was set up to help implement the statewide goal of reducing the amount of solid waste going into landfills.
Region B is composed of same 11 county area as the Green Hills Regional Planning Commission: Harrison, Daviess, Caldwell, Mercer, Grundy, Livingston, Carroll, Putnam, Sullivan, Linn, and Chariton. In order to develop and implement the activities and programs necessary to fulfill the requirements of the solid waste law and the regional plan,
Region B contracts with the Green Hills Regional Planning Commission. The Program Manager, Lisa Colson, oversees the programs and has the specific task to encourage the meeting of the waste reduction goals set forth by the Missouri Solid Waste Law. Extensive public education is a primary instrument used to fulfill the requirements of Region B.
To help reduce the amount of waste being generated, the public must be convinced of the need for waste reduction and made aware of available alternatives. Region B educates the public by holding Waste Tire Collections, Household Hazardous Waste collections, and contracts with local education professionals to conduct Recycling Education programs in the district's schools. These activities educate the public, as consumers, as to how they can make a daily difference in waste reduction.
Region B staff are continually working on projects and providing support and technical assistance to public and private businesses in their recycling efforts. Staff members also monitor and report on grant projects that receive funding during grant cycles, preparation of guidelines for the grant program, and development of financial assistance agreements with the grantees.
